The band was originally formed in 1977, by guitarist Dennis Greaves
who, disillusioned with the hard rock direction of the band he was in,
decided to set up a proper blues band. Taking bassist Peter Clark with
him, they recruited Kenny Bradley on drums, a vocalist and harmonica
player Mark Feltham, who soon became their vocalist as well. They originally
called themselves “Stan’s Blues Band”, and for two
years built up a local following in London clubs. In 1979 while playing
at The Thomas A’Beckett pub in the Old Kent Road they accepted
an offer from former musician Mickey Modern to manage them, and it was
he who persuaded them to change the band’s name to something sharper.
Dennis chose Nine Below Zero after the Sonny Boy Williamson II penned
song. At that time Mickey was a well respected artiste signed to A&M
Records. After producing the band’s demos he persuded A&M
to give him a label with which to launch this band’s career. Mickey
named the label M&L Records. Under Modern’s creative direction,
the band went full-time, and in the summer of 1980 released their first
album, Live At The Marquee, which was produced by Mickey Modern. By
the end of that year they were one of the most popular club attractions
in London, pulling in audiences from other genres, particularly the
New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, attracted by their high-energy fast
tempo sound. They headlined at the Hammersmith Odeon and featured respected
bluesman Alexis Korner, a long-time champion of new electric blues talent.
There was a period when NBZ were on TV almost weekly. They did The Chris
Tarrant Show, South Bank Show, the Old Grey Whistle Test, and The Young
Ones, as well as supporting The Kinks and The Who on tour. Mickey persuaded
Feltham and Greaves to reunite for a 10th anniversary gig. He also persuded
Dennis Arnold, who now worked at Harvey Goldsmith Ents, to promote the
band at the Town And Country Club, which they did with a sell-out success.
Suitably encouraged, they decided to stay together, with Gerry McAvoy
and Brendan O’Neill (ex-Rory Gallagher’s band) added on
bass and drums. They are well-respected by several more famous artists,
such as Paul McCartney and Steve Winwood.

Fri 30th May - UK SUBS
|
| 8.00pm |
|
| Age 16+ |
| £7.00 |
 |
|
Featuring the grandfather of UK punk, Charlie Harper, The Subs are
one of the hardest working and most respected UK punk bands. Their style
combines the energy of punk and the rock and roll edge of the pub rock
scene. The band had some hit singles such as “Stranglehold”,
“Warhead”, “Teenage”, and “Tomorrow’s
Girls”, with several of their songs managing to enter the UK’s
Top 40. Their biggest selling album came with 1980’s Crash Course.
The band played several John Peel sessions in 1977 and 1978 for BBC
Radio 1, and then signed a recording contract with GEM Records. With
the arrival of new bassist Alvin Gibbs and drummer Steve Roberts in
the early 1980s, the songs took on a more heavy metal-influenced edge.
In 1991, the Subs also had Lars Frederiksen (now of Rancid) on guitar
for a 30-date UK tour. The Subs’ song “Down on the Farm”
was covered by Guns N’ Roses on their 1993 covers album “The
Spaghetti Incident?”. The band have toured with The Misfits, The
Adicts, Osaka Popstar, Juicehead, and Orange. The Subs song “Warhead”
is played in the movie, This Is England. With their debut EP, Outl4w
kicked their way into the British media, achieving massive acclaim from
press and radio with live sessions for Steve Lamacq on BBC Radio One,
The Hottest Record In The World on Zane Lowe’s show and new bands
features across the press, including early dedication from the NME and
Kerrang! They hand designed every cover of their 7” single which
they released on their own record label Inl4w Wreckords and were chosen
as Vinyl Of The Week in NME. This excitement around the band is based
on more than just the fantastic story of three brothers and their mate
having a punk band with an average age of 15. The reaction has all been
about their tunes and their ferocious live show. Outl4w have played
over 250 shows around the world, including Concrete Jungle, Rebellion
and Wasted festivals. They have supported punk legends such as UK Subs
and Goldblade as well as winning over new fans outside the punk circuit
and playing all ages shows with the likes of grime artists JME and Tynchy
Stryder. Local supports are the brilliant Apocalypse Babies and World
Wide Waste.
